This photo
was taken at a place called Sky Blu. The snowfield is about 5,000 feet
up and the peak sticking out of the snow is another 1200 feet or so up.
Peaks that stick up out of snowfields like this are called nunataks. Sky
Blu is at 75 degrees South and when I was there it was -19C! Sky Blu is
used as a manned summer refuelling depot by the British Antarctic Survey.
There's nothing there except for a hut, tents, lots of aviation fuel drums
and a blue ice runway.
