This is another photo taken at Sky Blu and it's a close up of the aircraft runway there. The British Antarctic Survey are able to land wheeled as well as ski planes at Sky Blu because climatologically the place is pretty windy which means that snow tends to blow away exposing a blue coloured ice sheet which it turns out planes can land on OK! The photo shows you what a blue ice runway looks like. Except it's supposed to be bluer and slightly less snow-covered - when I was there it hadn't been windy in a little while!
